Victorian Antique Scandinavian Nalbinding Shawl$185.00
Antique, Victorian Scandinavian Nalbinding or knotless knit shawl. This is one of the most unique antique fashion pieces I have ever owned. It took me quite a long time to figure out the technique that was used to make this.
Nalbinding was a single needle technique that dates back as far as 10,000 years ago where it originated in Israel. It is best know, though, by works created by the Vikings in Scandinavia, the Swedes, in particular are known for this craft. The technique faded in popularity as knitting took over.
I have only been able to find examples of this type of piece in textile, museum collections.
Condition:
Very good condition for its age. There are a couple of holes, but it doesn't appear that fibers were broken or are missing, more liked missed stitches possibly? I don't entirely understand the technique so I am not sure. The fibers feel like a fine wool. While it looks delicate, it feels very sturdy.
Good condition, size OS.
Detailed measurements:
Shoulder - 42 inches
Length - 38 inches
