It wasn't so long ago that every young lady had to learn to embroider and stitch as part of her basic education, usually under the tutelage of some dour old aunt-like figure with a whiskery chin. This vintage 80s sweater is a nod to the classic sampler produced by every young lady during her education in the 19th century and earlier. It seems that every young lady was named something like Margaret then, so this sweater is THE MARGARET.

How quaint AND subversive, then, to wear this darling English sweater, with a slight Dutch theme featuring windmills, milkmaids, blue and pink tulips, and the obligatory letters and numbers, all knit in a feminine pastel palette, to one's seminar or lecture sometime in the 1980s, perhaps in Oxbridge. As if to say, "I don't give a shit about embroidery--someone else knit this sweater and I purchased it with my lady money. I give a shit about economics. After I take this off I'm going to put on a power suit."

Now you, too, can share in herstory. Maybe when you wear this sweater you might be saying "women's handicrafts were and are a valuable form of expression for those who weren't written into the history books" or maybe you'll be saying "80s fashion is back," or maybe you'll be saying, "this sweater is so warm."
