Edwardian Jeweled Frame Purse

1900s Jeweled Purse Frame, Semi Precious Stones, Steampunk, Chatelaine, Modified, Gold Metallic, Leather Pouch, Restoration Project

Materials: Metal Frame, Semi Precious Gems, Chain Strap, Leather Pouch

Brand / Maker: Designer Unknown

Era: 1900s

This is an extraordinary example of Victorian decadence and modern ingenuity...originally designed in the early 1900s the purse frame is elaborately studded with semi precious gems and would probably had a shorter wristlet chain strap. The original purse pouch would probably have been petit point needlework in a floral design, or beaded for evening wear. The unusual modifications came in 1970s when the current owner added the metallic leather pouch and a longer necklace chain with similar jewel features.

From early times, humans have had to carry necessary items on their person. A practical solution was to hang these from the waist. Keys or tools such as scissors could be carried attached to a cord or ribbon, or these items could also be placed in a pouch. This became quite common from the 16th to 18th centuries. the fashion for elaborate adornment and decorative purses were seen to decorate the waist of woman. Consider the chatelaine, a device popularized in the 18th century that attached to the waist of a woman’s dress, bearing tiny useful accessories, from notebooks to knives. In many ways chatelaines provided better access to such objects than we have today. In many ways this purse frame is a natural progression from the chatelaine to pocketbook, still entirely decorative but convenient for the addition of larger items.

A perfect project purchase, this framework is precious and unusual. With Garnets, Lapis, Pearl, glass and Coral, the effect is dazzling. The leather pouch can easily be exchanged for a contemporary variation or an antique embroidery purse ouch needing a frame. The long chain strap is equally useful as it suits a more modern wearer and makes the purse more functional too!
