Art Deco Gilded and Enameled Satsume Finger Bowls - Set of 6

Antique set of 6 dish hand painted, gilded and enameled Satsume finger bowls / mini bowls. From around 1800, a new style – Kyo-satsuma – became popular. Famed for its delicate, pale background adorned with over-glaze decoration of simple but bold figural and floral patterns with painted gold gilding. Colors often used were iron red, purple, blue, turquoise, black, yellow, and of course gold. This set is no exception and includes 6 of these rare dishes! They are exquisitely decorated with gold borders and inner hand painted scenes of a master / sage / holy man dressed in traditional garb, with a gold halo, and lush landscape background. Although originally created with the intention of being used as finger bowls (bowls of water used for rinsing one's fingers after the last course of a formal meal served à la russe) They could easily be used to serve small bites, dipping sauces, sake, or just for display! Each one is hand made and unique, but all match.

Condition:
Great antique condition with no structural issues of cracks or ships. The paint has very minor ware in some gold gilded areas.

Measurements:
2. 75" diameter
1" height
