Tabak of California
50s Designer High Waist Bermuda Shorts Button Trim

FEATURES: This pair of shorts is a fabulous example of 1950s-era sportswear. From Tabak of California, leading sportswear house for ages, they are from the estate of the firm's longtime head designer, Irene Saltern. These are styled with very narrow pleats at the front waist (instead of darts), a slightly wider leg than typical of the time, and button trim at the side hemline. Also have a set-on waistband, side pockets, and back metal zipper. These are slightly shorter than Bermuda-length, but a little longer than Jamaica-length. The slubbed fabric appears to be a silk/rayon blend. The color is a very deep teal, but may show brighter and not quite to true color in the photos due to the lighting. (Will try to get a better color representation.)

These are about the nicest pair of shorts I've ever had!

SIZE: Extra small to small, but don't go strictly by my size estimate--use the measurements. We suggest you measure a similar garment you own to determine fit. Please leave room for movement. We measure on outside of garment, laid flat but not stretched, unless otherwise specified.

MEASUREMENTS: Waist: 25"; Hips: 36 1/2"; Inseam: 7 1/2""; Rise: 13"

CONDITION: Absolutely no sign of wear on these. Many pieces from her estate had never been worn, and these look to be among them.

PROVENANCE: Ms. Saltern was a costume designer for the movies in the 40s and later on, a very influential figure in the booming California sportswear industry. In addition to Tabak of California, she designed for Phil Rose; her own label, Irene Saltern of California; and others. Many of the estate pieces I have were runway samples, spec pieces, and from Ms. Saltern's personal wardrobe.

Her designs tend to be classic, and can be worn as stylish, everyday pieces. The fabrics she used were exquisite, and the construction always top notch.
