50s Anne Fogarty Silk Soutache Dress, Day-to-Evening

1950s Anne Fogarty of Saks Fifth Avenue, Soutache Dress, Ultra Feminine Look

Materials: Silk, Acetate Lining

Brand / Maker: Anne Fogarty, Made in USA

Era: 1950s

This Beautiful "New Look" dress is a perfect example of Anne Fogarty's hourglass silhouette. In soutache applique, the blue sky silk day-to-evening dress mirrors her famous shirtwaist proportions, knee-length flared circle skirt. Anne felt that this shape emphasized womanhood while preserving mystique and modesty. Known for her tailoring, this dress has a mitered bodice that is inset into seamless shoulders and the scoop neckline.

Note: the condition of the construction and structure of the garment is good. But, there are areas of subtle/light fading on the skirt, hem, and shoulders (see photos). The dress has been dry cleaned but could be overdyed to conceal the color inconsistencies. Such a lovely example of Fogarty's designs.

Anne Fogarty was an American designer who started her design career in 1948. Her dresses commonly had fitted bodices and full skirts with crinolines, but after 1956, her "look" narrowed somewhat, with longer a-line full skirts. She began doing designs exclusively for Saks Fifth Avenue in 1957 and in 1959 she wrote the book, Wife Dressing, in which she gave advice on how to dress to please a man. In 1962 Fogarty opened her own design house, Anne Fogarty, Inc where she expanded her lines to include sportswear but was best known for her dresses.
