This is one of my favorite finds ever--an AMAZING art deco vanity set in a traveling case, ready to take a train to your favorite beauty spot. It's made in early plastic, perhaps celluloid or catalin--not Bakelite; it's not heavy enough for that--and it has survived in fair to good condition. The silver incised tassel motifs are fresh, and the blue color is sorich. It is photographing a bit brighter than it looks in real life; it's a deep lapis or royal shade, not electric blue.
The set includes a comb, a hand mirror, a nail file, a hairbrush, two powder jars, a shoe horn, and a box for receiving hair as you brush it out ... so you can use it to make your own hair pieces or perhaps mourning jewelry.
However, yes, this is a real vintage item. It has been used, although not much. I am not attempting to clean it up much; I like the little smudges that the years have left ... Even the way the silvering has streaked through the mirror is a bit magical (and the mirror is beveled!). There's a little powder left in the glass jars. The hairbrush's holder has shaped the boar bristles over time, as you see ... but you could still brush your hair with it. The comb's a bit unclean, though.
I love the way the tan moire lining has aged. Each item has left a sort of shadow on the fabric, as I tried to capture in a photo. It's so poetic. I find just one small, maybe 1mm hole in the lining. And the case itself is in pretty good shape. I think it's covered in a textured leather, and it has a supple leather handle. The push lock is working well.
