1930-40s Tenochtitlan Hand Woven Wool Rug 81” X 49”

1930-40s Tenochtitlan Hand Woven Wool Rug

This soft, wool blanket is hand woven in the historical Tenochtitlan (Place of the prickly pear) design – that of the eagle holding the snake standing on the prickly pear. In their legend, the or Mexica, were to travel until finding the place of the prickly pear and build their city there. In 1325, they stopped on an island in a marshy area (now the site of Mexico City), when they saw the bird and snake in the area of the cactus. Woven in cream, gold, brown, deep navy blue and light blue, the blanket measures 81. 5” long (not counting the fringe) and 52” wide. It has been woven so that it is reversible – the same pattern is on both sides with no rough knotting or tie-offs. In my opinion, this blanket is too soft to serve as a rug, but it could be used as a gorgeous wall hanging or as a throw over a chair or sofa. It is in excellent condition with no holes, tears, stains or odor. There is one decorative thread that has pulled loose – it can be seen in several photos.

This would be a beautiful addition to your American or Central American collection or to use every day in your décor. Please contact us if you have any questions.
