These vintage YSL earrings are a classic example of so many recurring Yves Saint Laurent motifs, from the spiral shape to the bold red enamel. These were made in the late 1970s for the house of Yves Saint Laurent by longtime collaborator and revered jeweler Robert Goossens. Goossens designed most of the highly influential YSL runway jewelry, from the mid-1970s until Saint Laurent closed his couture house in 2002. Not only is he known for his collaboration with YSL, but he designed runway jewelry for everyone from Cristobal Balenciaga to Elsa Schiaparelli. He got his start in couture jewelry by working with Coco Chanel herself in the 1950s. These earrings feature a nautilus-inspired swirling shape (a hallmark of YSL jewelry), simultaneously referencing the natural world and abstract shapes. The vibrant red enamel work sits in a rich matte gold-plating. My favorite feature is the way that the spiral actually curves behind the ear. They have a post back for pierced ears with a lever closure, and are so lightweight and comfortable to wear. Measures 1 1/8" long x 1" wide and signed YSL.
