Vintage Peacock Embroidered Bed Cover Tablecloth

This is a hand embroidered off white vintage bed cover with peacocks that can also be used as a tablecloth. It is 82” long x 73 ½” wide.

Two peacocks are facing each, encircled by a wreath or arbor. There’s a separate cluster of flowers at the top and 2 vertical rows of other decorative stitching. The colors are still very vivid and including pink, purple, green, yellow, blue, coral, and brown.

The embroidery is in fantastic shape. There are a few loose threads along the pink border—please see pics. Other than that, there are a few light stains, one in the pink border and one on the right where the cover hangs down. Neither are quite an inch and noticeable.

The top and bottom edges are hemmed; the 2 sides are selvaged. That’s what makes me think this could have been used as a tablecloth, because many vintage tablecloths had 2 hemmed sides and 2 selvaged sides. But maybe bed covers did too.

I’m not sure of the fabric content but I think it’s cotton. The drape is heavy enough that it won’t slide all over the place but a perfect weight for summer nights or a tablecloth.

I’m not sure how old it is. Maybe 1940s.
