Large 1800s Qing Dynasty antique hand carved wooden temple corbel panel. This is an amazing piece of art and history! It was saved from a temple building in China during the communist revolution when they were destroying ancient artifacts because religion was no longer allowed. It is large and substantial and was hand carved from one solid piece of wood. It shows an intricate scene of three dynamic characters / people from the Qing Dynasty era. It appears to be Confucius writing and two others observing, or it could be a scholar practicing Shu (calligraphy - one of the four arts (四藝). Amazingly, it still has it's original red and gilt gold paint in tact! The block was likely on a corner of a building or connected with other similar blocks in it's temple. A bracket was added to the back in the early mid century for easy display and hanging on a wall. This relief would be a rare and historical decorative for your home and would no doubt be a tremendous conversation starter. Excellent antique condition!
