Victorian Early Victorian Sheer Silk Floral Pelerine Capelet

This incredible piece is made from a lightweight and delicate sheer silk weave. In a warm, coffee color brown tone, the fabric features a large scale windowpane pattern strewn with pink and green rose blooms & branches, as well as a more demure town and pink flower & branches. The collar and bottom edge are finished with a tiny piping (the tiniest I think I've ever seen!) and the bottom hem is finished with a self-fabric ruffle. The center front features a split opening (but the bottom end is sewn together) with a hook & eye closure at the collar (this hook & eye set are not original to the piece but I added them in presumption that it would have originally had them). Overall condition is excellent -especially for its age- with a repair at upper, center back where the fabric has 'shattered' and I've stabilized this with silk crepeline and silk thread (caution should still be used when wearing).

Now here's the kicker - the entire piece was sewn by hand! Sewing machines were fairly common household items by the 1850's-60's, so it is possible that this piece is much older. However, upon initial research, circa 1840's-60's is my best ballpark on when it was made and worn.

Measurements:

- 15.5 inch neck opening/collar

- approximately 15.5 inches from shoulder to shoulder

- 14.5 inch length from back neck nape to tip of point
