1880s bridle rosettes brooch intaglio reverse glass brooch floral brooch antique Brooch. This vintage round domed glass bridle rosette pin has a bouquet of flowers design lithograph with a black background. The pin has a brass backing and c clasp back. The rosette is 1 3/4" in diameter and is in very good vintage condition.
Equestrian bridle rosettes were originally used as "jewelry" for horses and often they would be in matching pairs to use on both sides of the horse's bridle for parades, shows,
Bridle rosettes can run the full range from very plain to highly artistic. During the 1800s, they grew popular with the riding and driving public and were produced in increasingly decorative styles. By the Victorian period, thick glass domes were covering polished brass backs. Beneath the domes, fancy, colorful dye cuts and transfers would be inserted. Flowers and animals were popular subjects.
In ancient and medieval times, bridle rosettes were made of metals, such as iron, bronze and copper. As industrialized manufacturing flourished in the 1800’s, bridle rosettes were created with glass domes enclosing hand-painted artwork, dye cuts, pictures and photographs.
