Red Velvet Helmet Hat

Red velvet cloche helmet hat with scattered rhinestones, an Original by Bessie Hicks.

1970s church hat, Easter hat, Christmas hat, high tea, fancy and fun this large size hat has a red netted big flower on the side and red velvet shaped leaves form the top of the hat.

Some of the leaves have a burnt edge to them, which looks to be how it was designed.

It's in overall good condition. The velvet is designed with a sturdy frame. The hat measures about 5 1/2" tall and 11" wide with the netted flower. It measures 7" by 7" inside, 24" in circumference. It is 5 1/4" deep. It is a larger size hat. You can wear it a few different ways. This is some creasing on the top, but it doesn't affect how great it will look on.

Bessie Hicks, was one of 10 sisters who made all their clothes and hats growing up in Jackson, Missouri. Eventually, 6 of them joined together to open a hat business, Ann's Hat Boutique in St. Louis, Missouri. In African-American culture, Sunday has historically been a day to put on your best clothes and hat, no matter what your work week. The tradition for women of faith to cover their heads symbolized reverence. African-American women took it to a whole new level of beauty, self-respect, and fashion. Bessie Hicks is about 91 now, but she and her sister, Ann Dillon ran the store until about 2015. This hat was designed by Bessie.
