White and Green Shell Necklace

The beauty of this piece really lies in the irregularity of the beads, which speak to the hand-craftsmanship with which Native American jewelry is made. The ivory beads are crafted from shells, in the traditional "heishi" process, and I believe the green beads are aventurine, a mineral that is believed to relieve anxiety and put the mind at ease.

Indigenous People all over the world created beads with which to trade long before their contact with Europeans, but especially when settlers came to what is now North America, the variety of beads the Native People used (as well as the quantity they produced) changed drastically, which is why we can find examples of Native American jewelry using Venetian millefiori beads, large "padre" beads, and the like.

Measuring approximately 18. 5", it is the perfect layering piece; I love this piece worn solo, layered with other bead necklaces shown here, or with everyday chains and pendants. It is finished in the back with a twist closure.

Great vintage condition.
