Rare, one of a kind, Maddux birds vase 2 birds with the wings forming the vase leading to the double opening for 2 attached vases. The bird's heads rest on an oval base. The yellow and faded brown color is really striking.
This piece is from the late 40s. What makes it extremely rare is that there are two of his signatures on the bottom of the base. It says W. Maddux for William Maddux. You will find Wm Maddux or Maddux of California but not W. Maddux. I consulted with relatives of William Maddux. They had never seen one like it but were convinced it was his work from the late 40s, as he was transitioning over to new owners. It was hard to read and may not show up well in the photos but I was able to see both signatures, with a lot of looking under different light.
Condition: All over VG condition. On the very end of the beaks there are some chips, see photos. I have not tried to repair but it looks easy to put some brown paint on them, which would hide it. One of the chips is also under the beak (you'd have to pick up the vase to see it underneath). There is also one small chip on the inside of the wing and one tiny chip on the inside of one of the vases. There is some crazing. None of these get in the way of how beautiful this rare piece is. I just want to make sure I list any imperfections, no matter how small. Please feel free to email me if you need more photos of the condition.
Measures 11 1/2" tall and 8" wide from beak to beak. It starts off much more narrow at the top and gets widest towards the bottom, where the beaks are. Each vase measures 2 1/4" x 1 1/2"
