This New Look-era, late 1940s or very early 1950s dress in woven black wool has a fabulous design of criss-crossing, inset red wool panels over the shoulder area. The bright red trim peeks out of openings in the black wool of the dress, for a fun flash of color. The button front bodice has elbow length sleeves with slightly puffed shoulders and turned-back, slit cuffs. The buttons run from the tiny pointed collar to the waist seam, then continue from the waist to the hip. Darts shape the bust area. The moderately full skirt has 12 gores (or panels), a center-front pleat, and 2 slit pockets, one in each side seam. The lightweight wool is unlined. In very good condition, the dress has one teeny-tiny mend in the back of the skirt (see close-up photo), and it is missing its original belt. Based on the underarm to waist seam measurement, it may fit best for a petite or shorter-waisted person. This versatile late 1940s-early 50s dress can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.
