Herbert Fink's Antique Papago Large Hand Woven Basket$495.00
Authentic antique Papago large hand woven coil basket. Pima and Papago baskets were originally used for carrying, defense, adornment, furniture, culture and fine art, preparation and serving of food, religious ceremonies, war, carrying water, and social life among other things. This piece is large and the handwork is stunning. It would make for a beautiful floor basket or vessel from large pampas grass or palm fronds. It also looks amazing on it's own. It is entirely hand made from intricate coiled rows of natural fibers (we believe it is made mostly from martynia). The Papago were surrounded by harsh, dry vegetation with an abundance of martynia. Papago bowl baskets traditionally have a globular shape with their width exceeding their height. Not only does it's original roots tell a great historical story, but it was purchased and owned by Herbert Fink! Fink was the founder and creator of the iconic of Rodeo Drive's designer and high-end retail scene. He helped shape the sartorial tastes of Beverly Hills and Hollywood, championing fashion houses such as Missoni and Versace before they were well-known to Los Angeles’ fashion scene.
