Frontier Justice by Wayne Gard, 1949, published by The University Of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 324 pages. First edition, second printing. Hardcover comes with dust jacket in fair/good condition. It is covered in the original plastic by Plasti-Kleer, a company made to protect dust jackets. There are some large creases on the top front page and some missing paper, close to the spine. The spine has some wear and some ink. The back of the dust jacket is in good condition. I tried to remove the plastic, to get a better look, but didn't want to damage it further. In spite of these flaws, it still looks very presentable. There is a signature inside the cover, from a previous owner, but the rest of the book has clean pages and not bent. The binding is strong.
The Western Frontier with formal law lacking, these early citizens on the prairies and mining camps had their own laws, dealing with horse thieves and other outlaws on the spot by hanging. The California Gold Rush, the Wyoming cattle wars, the cattlemen versus sheepmen, and loosely enforcing the law we have the Vigilanties, the Texas Rangers, and what judges were available we have Issac "The Hanging Judge" Parker, Judge Roy Bean with a bottle of liquor in one hand and justice in the other, Judge Almond who would not tolerate long speeches because they cut down on his fines. All depict a bloody and primitive law enforcement on the American Frontier. Illustrated with photographs, and a bibliography.
