MC Lilley & Co Military
Edwardian Freemason Knights Templar Hat W Passion Cross$150.00
Very nice antique wool hat by M.C. Lilley & Co., Manufacturers of Military and Society Goods out of Ohio. This is a Freemason Knights Templar Kepi hat and part of the uniform for the Knights Templar dating back to the the early 1900s. The cross on the front is called the Passion Cross and on each side is a silver button with the Templar Otto "In hoc signo vinces". This is greek and loosely translates to “By this sign thou shalt conquer”.
Best of all the original owners name is clearly printed on the inside. I was able to find information on him online. A Julius Elkanah Boggs 1854-1914. As I found this at an estate sale in Pickens, South Carolina, I'm confident this has to be him. See screen shots in the photos for details.
It is well made and in very good if not remarkable condition for it's age. There are some signs of wear and age, most notably on the bill of the cap, please see all photos. No size noted so see measurements:
approx : 21" around the interior, 7.5 across the cap part of the hat and 2 3/4 deep
