This is a real deer antler, probably a roe deer, and includes the base of the antler known as pearling. It is small and has a natural polish to it from being handled. The component holding it is probably British pewter with nice Black Forest detail including oak leaves and tiny acorns which are accentuated by natural antiquing. The small pendant measures 1.25 inches. The chain it hangs from is a choker length and measures 19 inches and a naturally antiqued silvertone. The lobster claw closure is new and added to the necklace since the original one was damaged and not functional. It is circa 1905.

This type of jewelry is known as Charivari jewelry. Hunting trophy jewelry has been made and worn for ages through out Europe. The Black Forest style using oak leaves tends to be Bavarian, the Southern part of Germany. Most of the time, it was given to a wife or sweetheart from the hunter. Sometimes it was worn by the hunter for good luck in the hunt. Regardless, it was made by the part of the animal that could not be eaten, like antlers, teeth or hooves.
