Beautiful early mid century lacquer hand painted wedding basket / box with with three tiers and a handle. These were originally used to fill with food and give to the bride and groom after they were married. However they are commonly used for picnics, storage, and decoration. This lovely piece was hand made sometime between 1930-1940. It features 3 sectioned tiers that come apart individually and stack together under a framing handle. The bottom two tiers are open spaces and the top tier has separated dishes / sectioning. It has exquisite craftsmanship with intricately hand painted landscapes, floral motifs, and even gold leaf accenting. The top has a symbol that means "longevity". Excellent condition with some imperfections on the paint, consistent with age.
