Antique Victorian Brooch Fly Insect Oak Leaf Bug Pin Spider Gothic Estate Jewelry Dress Accessory Rhinestone Glass Stones

Antique Victorian or early Edwardian gilt brooch. Rectangular frame done in a lovely botanical theme with a large maple leaf in the center and a fly off to the right side. Four faceted amber glass stones bezel set near the corners. The Victorians were a sentimental lot. Much of the jewelry of the period was themed and symbolic and this brooch is a nice example. The maple leaf symbolizes longevity and abundance while the fly, being a short lived creature, represented human mortality and secret keeping.

Maybe this brooch was a wish for the long life of its wearer. Or might it have been given to assure the wearer that their secret would always be kept safe?

This brooch measures 2. 5" x 2" and has a "C" clasp. There is no maker's mark.

The pin itself is a tiny bit crooked, but it closes securely.

The glass stone on the bottom left is chipped (see last photo). Overall nice condition for its age.
