Antique Traditional Hand Crafted Red Black and Gold Lacquered Solid Wood Wedding Basket$288.00
Antique hand carved lacquered solid wood traditional wedding basket / storage box. These stunning pieces were traditional created as wedding gifts and usually were used to carry a bride's dowry when moving to her new husband's family home and/or to carry food to a wedding or other special events. This one in particular is quite elaborate with carved and gilded cinnabar lacquer panels and detailed gilt raised relief designs throughout. The thick and ornate handle is fixed in place and decorated in black and red with gold gilt traditional motifs such as animals and geometric shapes. The lid features an elaborately carved traditional scene where a Ming dynasty official wearing a Futou (襆頭), also known as the wushamao (烏紗帽). Ordinary citizens were not allowed to wear these headdress unless attending wedding ceremonies or events involving any noble families/officials. In modern China, wushamao is commonly used as a metaphor for officials and government posts. The man wearing the Futou is surrounded by servants. The top lid can be removed completely to reveal an internal removable tray. Below the tray there is a wide open area for storage. The interior is all solid glossy black lacquer in coloring. It is a very evocative design and is bound to stand out and become a feature item and talking point. Not something you see very often and a highly ornate example with desirable lacquer panels exhibiting skilled craftsmanship. You could use it for a picnic date, storage in your home, or just as stunning decor.
Condition: The condition is excellent for it's age! There are no structural damage issues - only paint and lacquer chipped off in a few very small spots (review photos).
