These pendants were created in Rome in the early 20th Century, and were certainly picked up by a tourist as a token of fond memories. These micro-mosaics were created in the tradition of Grand Tour Period (1680-1880), during which wealthy families would take lengthy trips around Europe, and pick up distinct examples of regional craftsmanship along the way. To create a micro mosaic, rods of opaque vitreous glass are made, and then cut into tiny fragments called "tesserae." These pieces are assembled by hand in a small metal tray, in a very labor-intensive process.

Both pendants feature a heart emblazoned with ROMA in the center, and three dangling teardrops. One heart is just slightly larger than the other, but they both measure about 1.5" inches in length (on the smaller heart, the teardrops dangle longer). The total length with the bale/jump ring is approx. 1.75"; note that the larger heart has a larger jump ring as well. The chain is not included but please contact me if you are interested in purchasing a chain.
