Antique Italian Micro-Mosaic Floral Pendant$165.00
This magical heirloom was made in Italy in the 19th Century during the Grand Tour Period (which lasted from approximately 1680-1880). Wealthy families would travel at length around Europe to take in the culture of various European regions. Italian micromosaics became a very popular souvenir from these tours; the craftsmanship seen here was like something they had never seen before/not found outside Italy. You will sometimes see modern reproductions of Italian micro-mosaic jewelry, but it is immediately identifiable as not original due to the larger pieces, as opposed to these delicate ones which blend seamlessly together. To create a micromosaic, rods of opaque glass are made, and then cut into tiny fragments called "tesserae." These pieces are assembled by hand in a small metal tray, in a very labor-intensive process. The result is this timeless and romantic pendant, featuring a colorful bouquet, surrounded by scalloped details and a gold border with intricate filigree work. There is also a three-dimensional aspect to this piece that really allows the glass pieces to catch the light and sparkle, like flowers glistening with dewdrops. The bale allows this piece to be worn with most chains; the chain is not included/contact me if you are interested in purchasing a chain. Pendant is about 1" diameter, & 1.25" long with bale.
