Stand out from the crowd in this amazingly bizarre karakul style costume hat...
This incredible hat comes from Hooker & Howe, a costume company located in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The company opened in 1905 and operated til about 1940. They would print catalogs of their Internationally-inspired, etc. costumes which were used all over the country for both professional and personal costuming.
The Karakul (traditional Turkish hat) hat is made from Astrakhan style fur, that has been dyed a brilliant orange-coral color. To compliment this, a light blue wool felt flap decorates one side of the hat. This flap is trimmed in real metal bullion, woven ribbon, as well as 13 bullion metal coils of fringe. The inside is lined with black woven cotton fabric, and there is a Hooker & Howe label inside. The overall condition is very good, with some mild signs of wear; one of the bullion fringe pieces has uncoiled slightly at the bottom, the fur is sightly matted and bare in certain spots, and I believe there may have been a patch or other adornment originally at hat front, but that has since been removed (stitches still there).
