90's Handmade Reverse Appliqué Guna Mola Blouse

Molas are handmade textiles, using a reverse appliqué technique, they are part of the traditional costume of the women of the indigenous people of Guna Yala, off Panama & Colombia -a matriarchal society! These molas are made from cotton scraps of fabric & depict a synthesis of their traditional culture, along w/influences from the last ~100 years. The designs were developed from ancient body paintings, which the women used to decorate their upper bodies. These molas may take anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months to create & are usually created for a special occasion, and then worn once or twice.

In this example, we have a central female character, surrounded by other villagers/family. In the 4 corners, surrounding the outer walls, are 4 dog or cat-like creatures. The colorful narrow slats that cover the negative space symbolize the beams of sun that come through the bamboo huts of the Guna.

The panel on the back is a perfect twin to the front panel, but w/colors reversed. The sleeves & upper body or yoke of blouse consist of a synthetic fabric w/busy, Pucci-esque print. This fabric dates the blouse to the late 80's to 90's, although the mola panels may be much older. Small metal zipper closure at the front neck & fanciful brocade trim w/metallic gold touches, at cuffs & chest.
