Vintage 1990s Betsey Johnson dress. Black crushed velvet with a vibrant floral / roses print in pink, red & green.
A shimmery, stretchy velvet has a ruched busy and bodice, fitting much like a Sherman's dress.
V necked in both front and back this versatile beauty hits just at the knee with short, almost half sleeves.
I love how this can go from day, to evening to formal or even work for a holiday part or New Years Even event with a simple change of hair, shoes and of course attitude!
In the 60s Betsey hung out with the Velvet Underground, married & divorced John Cale & made a rep for herself as an Avant Garde designer working at Paraphrenalia & Alley Cat. She opened her first shop in the 70s called Betsey Bunky Nini, which failed to take off. Undaunted, Betsey then started her own label Betsey Johnson LLC, sold from a little shop on Thompson Street in SOHO, whose style invoked a mix of Punk, Studio 54 Disco & New Wave, which is where the rare & coveted "Punk" label surfaced.
