About the designer:
After graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York, Canio traveled to Italy to apprentice with Fabiani, the renowned master tailor of ladies’ suits and dresses. Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Toglia worked for Jane Derby, Inc., the New York City fashion house that would eventually be known as Oscar de la Renta. He eventually departed Derby to start his own label in New York City, designing fashions that were featured in luxury department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Lord & Taylor.
He designed dresses for fashion icons like Wallis, Duchess of Windsor, and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy for her 1962 tour of India and Pakistan. Everywhere she went on that trip, crowds adored her understated, yet fashionable wardrobe, and Mr. Toglia was proud to have his work worn by Mrs. Kennedy. Through the years Mr. Toglia’s talent for design extended beyond his women’s fashion label to include carpets, bed linens, and home furnishings.
Canio resided in Hobe Sound FL and Fishers Island NY.
