This curve hugging column dress from Victor Costa has a sweetheart neckline atop a fitted torso with a slightly dropped waist. The open skirt is draped at the waist with a few soft pleats, and the two sides overlap just enought to show off the right amount of leg. Because black velvet absorbs light, the details of the dress aren't very visible in the photos, but I found the same Victor Costa dress in blue satin on 1st Dibs and added a photo of it here. This dress lacks size, fabric and union labels, making it difficult to date precisely. But based on the designer label, it is likely from the early 1980s. The velvet fabric is most likely rayon. Sizing charts indicate that it is closest to a modern size 6, possibly up to a size 8. Please use the measurements for the best guidance regarding actual size.
Notes on the Designer: Victor Costa is an American fashion designer who once was dubbed the "King of Copycats." He achieved international fame in the mid-1970s for mimicking European couture, tailoring those garments for American customers at more affordable prices. With the tremendous resurgence of interest in luxury vintage fashions, eveningwear designed by Victor Costa in the 1980s has become very popular once again.
