80’s Asymmetrical Wool Tartan Knit Sweater-Dress

Perhaps one of the first well-known Japanese designers, Kansai Yamamoto, was the first Japanese designer to show in London, in 1971. He modernized the traditional take on Japanese clothing, following the 'basara' movement, known for more flamboyant and colorful designs and styles, and was majorly influenced by Kabuki theater. He is also well-associated with David Bowie, who saw his designs on the cover of Harpers & Queen, and asked him to design for his Aladdin Sane UK Tour of '73 & US tour of '74. This 80's example of a Sweater-Dress features the classic asymmetrical features that married Punk & New Wave aesthetics of the time. Made from a wool blend, this knit dress may be styled an infinite number of ways, thanks to the slouchy & somewhat oversized fit. Wear the stripe waist section at the waist, or pull it down to your hips -Japanese fashion is often quite fun to play with! While the low turtleneck, cuffs and waist feature a striped design, the oversized batwing sleeves have Tartan pattern in reverse colorways, to add to the asymmetry of their cut sections. Overall condition is excellent, to like new, with no flaws to note and little to no signs of wear! Just some very mild pilling. Labels read 'Kansai, Japan' and translated secondary tag reads '80% wool/20% Nylon.'
