79's Mid-Century Woven Wicker Scally Cap$82.00
What a fun vintage scally cap / flat cap! The "scally cap" used to be a legal obligation. Back in 1571, British parliament passed legislation stating all males were to wear a woollen cap on Sundays and holidays, or pay a hefty fine. This was done to protect and promote the wool trade. But by 1597, the law was repealed. That didn't put an end to the woollen flat cap, which turned out to be a hit! Come the turn of the 20th century, it was worn the working class. The flat cap took off in the Northeast during the 20th century, becoming a standard in boys' wear and among the working class. Eventually it made its way even further west and up the social classes with a wide variety of wearers, from cabbies to upper-class Englishmen. But what makes this piece special is the fabrication. We have never seen one made in an open weave wicker like this! Now a traditionally winter hat has been designed in all-season fabric. The air flows right through and the hat holds its shape very well. The inside brim has a soft and padded strip of fabric, so you don't have to worry about comfort or your hair - you won't want to take this off! It's the perfect additional to your brunch, weekend, or casual wardrobe AND a guaranteed unique piece that you won't see others sporting. It has no sizing label inside, see measurements below.
