ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Academy Award-winning fashion and costume designer William "Billy" Travilla (1920-1990) became a star in the 1950s and 60s thanks in part to his premier client, Marilyn Monroe. Travilla worked with Monroe on eight films and designed her most iconic costumes. Among them were the famous white dress from the film The Seven Year Itch (1955), regarded as one of the most famous dresses in the world. Other notable Travilla creations include Marilyn's gold lame gown and her pink diamonds dress in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). Monroe so loved Travilla's designs that she autographed a nude calendar for Travilla with the words, “Billy Dear, please dress me forever, I love you! Marilyn.”
Travilla also lit up the silver screen with designs for Joan Crawford, Jane Russell, Faye Dunaway, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Betty Grable, Lana Turner, Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, Lena Horne to name but a few.
In addition to designing for Hollywood, Travilla tended to his own exclusive clothing label designing highly sought-after ready-to-wear collections sold in high-end department stores and exclusive boutiques. He continued to design until his death in 1990.
