This extraordinary example of African craftwork is an antique dashiki presumably from West Africa. It is a loose-fitting, pullover shirt sewn from strips of Cotton Linen with colorful, African hand embroidery which symbolizes the status of the wearer and applique at the neckline and bib front/back. "Dashiki" is a loanword from the West African Yoruba term danshiki, which refers to a short, sleeveless tunic worn by men. The Yoruba borrowed the word from the Hausa dan ciki, which refers to a short tunic worn by males under larger robes. The Yoruba dashiki, a work garment, was originally sewn from hand-woven strip cloth. It has deep-cut armholes with gussets set to create a flare at the hem. As this is not a garment produced for trade or tourism it is assumed that it was a collectors item purchased via travel to Africa or via an antiques dealer in the tribal arts. A very unique piece exceptional for it's age and time of use. There are a few flaws noted in photos, some fray at the neckline, a small hole in the sleeve, and one or two small rust stains. All normal conditions for the age and ware of an ethnic item over 60 years. The stability of the handiwork and structure of the cloth makes this item very wearable even today. Wonderful wedding item, great for heritage events, or pride ceremony.
