Description: Truly awesome 1950s wool pullover letterman sweater vest in bright red with dimensional WHS Megaphone emblem! Most probably a cheerleader sweater. I've included a photo of similar vests worn by a cheer squad in 1956. Made by uniform/equipment supplier: CranBarry, Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA – which is still in business today! Cheerleading is a typical and uniquely American activity, which came into being as early as the 1940’s. Pep Squads and cheerleading began at the high school level in the late 40’s and the National Cheerleaders Association was founded around 1950. By the 1960s cheerleading was well established in Universities and colleges. As a fun fact: the vinyl pompom was invented in 1965! This is a great piece of Americana!
There are a few small pin holes and slight stains but considering this was a functional sports uniform – it's in very good condition!
