This is an authentic dog tooth necklace from Papua New Guinea. It was bought in 1966 from one of the Pacific islands. These were used as money at some point, since cowrie shells and dog teeth were a symbol of wealth. These were also worn by or given to brides. This one was probably made by a native to the island for the tourist trade. There are some tiny cowrie shells missing, and two dog teeth missing. The cord is original to the necklace, but the contemporary goldtone ," S" hook has been added and can easily be taken off. It measures 16 inches and can be worn on an average female size neck.
