This marigold linen 2-piece set is a simply chic 1960s skirt suit by designer Geoffrey Beene. Dating from his early period, not long after opening his eponymous label in 1963, the set has a very modern feel, very of-the moment for the early-to-mid-1960s. The sleeveless, waistcoat-style jacket or top has a curved hem in back that is a bit longer than the notched hem in front. It has a wide, scooped neckline and faux pockets (decorative flaps). Vertical seams shape the bust and waist very slightly; it has an overall boxy fit. The top fastens down the front with leather-covered buttons in the same vibrant shade of orange-yellow or marigold as the medium-weight linen fabric. The matching, knee-length skirt has a narrow waistband with small gathers all around that add a bit of fullness to the hip area. The skirt has 2 vertical seams in front, each with a full-sized, functional pocket set into it. The plastic skirt zipper is hidden in the left-hand pocket, and the waistband fastens with 2 metal hooks and eyes. Both pieces of the set are lined in marigold silk. In very good condition, this effortlessly stylish 1960s Geoffrey Beene skirt suit has some wear to the leather of the buttons (see close-up photo), and 2 light-colored marks near the neckline, on the inside/lining of the jacket or vest (one is on the front and one on the the back). Neither will be visible when the suit is worn. (The set has been freshly dry-cleaned, but the lining marks remain; they are unlikely to be removed by further cleaning.) The suit is otherwise is great condition: the linen and silk lining fabric are sturdy and ready to wear for many years to come.
