Tabak of California
60s Designer Tabak of California Capelet and Pencil Skirt

DESCRIPTION: This sophisticated ensemble is a twist on the little black dress and is dressier than the typical cape and skirt set from that era. Perfect for office to dinner. Made by Tabak of California, this came directly from the estate of Tabak's head designer of many years, Irene Saltern. Ms. Saltern designed for the movies and later on was a leading figure in the booming California sportswear industry. Many of these estate pieces were runway samples, spec pieces, and from Ms. Saltern's personal wardrobe.

The capelet is seamed and shaped over the shoulders so that it won't easily slip off, and the hem is weighted at the front edges--signs of the quality construction and attention to detail present in Ms. Saltern's designs. The high-waisted pencil skirt has shaping darts front and back, a narrow set-on waistband, and back nylon zipper. The fabric is a nubby-weave blend, possibly linen and rayon or silk and rayon (a burn test was inconclusive). Both pieces are fully lined in a lovely rayon taffeta.

The capelet was missing its original two-button fastener, so I've made two for it, one casual and one fancy.

CONDITION: Near mint. I believe this was a runway sample, worn once, based on the numbering on the tag.

SIZE: Approx. size 4 and up to a 6 with the side seams let out. Don't go by the garment tag or by my estimate--use the measurements. We suggest you measure a similar garment you own to determine fit. We measure on outside of garment, laid flat but not stretched, unless otherwise specified.

CAPELET: Approx. 14" shoulder to shoulder, but because it's not fully structured, the fit is somewhat flexible.

SKIRT
Waist: 26 1/2"
Hip: a scant 35" (There is ample room to let this out up to about 2", and I suspect it was taken in for the model who wore it, as the seam allowances are much wider than normal.)
Length: 22" down side seam
