First let me describe this dress: It is a heavy black wool jersey knit in a classic A-line shape. It has a foldover (turtleneck) collar in a ribbed knit with matching cuffs. It also has hidden, on-seam pockets, it zips up the back, is fully lined, and is in flawless condition. This dress is a classic design from the mid-20th Century that clearly presages the "mod" character of 1960s fashion.
There are no labels in the dress, so here's why we are attributing it to such a dominating force in mid-century American clothing design, Norman Norell (or possibly "Traina-Norell" which preceded the Norman Norell label): First, and most obvious, we acquired the dress in a grouping that included several other labeled Norell pieces, so we had these items for comparison. Secondly, by the mid-twentieth century Norell's wool jersey dresses were staples of the Norell label. His fashions were famous for their simplicity, timeless design, and high quality construction - criteria of which this dress is exemplary.
