60’s Couture Silk Cheongsam Sleeveless Dress

This is a stunning example of a Cheongsam dress, custom made by a local Californian designer in the late 1960’s for a runway fashion collection. It was crafted from 100% silk with a vibrant floral & geometric pattern in tones of pink, red, & orange. It’s silhouette is fitted & flattering with subtle slits at the side seam hem for comfort and movement. The interior is fully lined & the neckline is classic with a mandarin collar and button closure at the chest. There is also a hidden zipper at the side seam. It’s close-fitting silhouette stays true to traditional Chinese cheongsam design. Team it with a dainty clutch and platforms for an opulent evening look.

History:

The cheongsam (AKA qipao) originated in 1920s Shanghai and was adopted by movie stars and schoolgirls alike. It's history reflects the rise of the modern Chinese woman in the twentieth century dating back to the overthrowing of the Qing dynasty. Women became teachers & university students, they shed the traditional, ornate robes of the past & adopted an early form of the cheongsam that emerged from the androgynous men’s changpao garment. Shanghai, an active & vibrant port city, was at the cutting edge of this fashion shift.
