This jacket dress by Canadian designer Arnold Scaasi was worn by Austine McDonnell Hearst (1920-1991), wife of William Randolph Hearst. It probably dates to the 1960s and has many hallmarks of being custom made for Mrs. Hearst. The ensemble comprises a brown silk faille jacket lined in purple silk and a matching dress. The jacket has 3/4 sleeves, and it closes with four large self-covered buttons (note in the photos the pleated treatment on the sides of the sleeves). The matching dress has a blouson bodice over a fitted midriff band and a gathered skirt. It zips and then buttons up the back with the same buttons as the jacket, and is lined in brown silk. Both pieces have padded shoulders. No size labels, so we are estimating the dress to be a modern size Medium, or 8-10. Please refer to the measurements for additional guidance regarding size.
