I've seen and handled many vintage Little Black Dresses, but this is the first one I have ever come across with feathers. The dress itself is sophisticated, with a stand-up banded collar, decorative buttons & loops at the left shoulder, and a panel of fabric that resembles a sarong or half-tabard. The panel starts at the left outer shoulder, and flows down the left side to the waist, where it is fixed with a few soft vertical pleats. From the waist, it curves gradually into the bottom right a few inches above the hem. A band of ostrich (maribou?) feathers edge the panel all the way from the shoulder to the hem.
SIZE: No size label
Bust - 37" (94 cm)
Waist - 33.5" (85 cm)
Hips - 38" (96.5 cm)
Dress length from shoulder seam - 40" (101.5 cm)
Sweep: 41" (104 cm)
FABRIC/COLORS: The black fabric is a medium weight crepe - based on a fiber burn test, I believe it is mostly acrylic with perhaps a bit of rayon. The dress is fully lined in a lightweight cottony fabric.
TAGS: Carol Craig. There is an ILGWU tag in the left lower sideseam of the type that was used from 1963 to 1974.
CLOSURES: A long metal zipper down the back, with a hook & thread eye at the top
CONDITION: The dress was altered by a previous owner to make it smaller/narrower - it was taken in along both sideseams using white thread - see closeup. The extra fabric was cut away in some sections, so restoration to the original size is not an option. No stains, holes, tears or other issues noted.
