Nan Duskin
50s Painted Rose Beautifully Made Silk Cocktail Dress

During the mid-20th Century, if you lived in Philadelphia, and wanted a high-end designer or couture piece, you went to Nan Duskin. They carried designers such as Norman Norell, Chanel, YSL, Hanae Mori, Jean Muir and more. The 'Nan Duskin' label is usually found in conjunction with the actual designer of the piece, but alas! the original label of this dress is gone. After some research, however, I do feel comfortable saying I believe it may be attributed to James Galanos (he fancied artistic floral prints, and often utilized delicate bows as a design detail).
This piece is made from a light to medium weight silk fabric, that has been completely backed throughout by a thin silk gauze. The dress is sleeveless, with a stylized neckline that features small pleat tucks, which are echoed within the box pleating at upper skirt. The waist is trimmed with thin self-fabric bows front to back. The skirt has a lovely volume to it, which juxtaposed against the nipped waist, gives a slight air of the 'New Look' movement. The front bodice is lined with a black silk fabric, and has picot ribbons sewn at inner waist (for hanging), as well as a small weight sewn in at center front lining. The skirt gets its fullness from a sewn-in black, lightweight silk petticoat. Overall condition is good with some repairs and flaws throughout; wear to the silk around neckline and at back zipper, original sleeves were so worn they had to be removed and a new armscye shape was created, some tears in petticoat skirt -not visible from exterior, and a small velvet flower appliqué was sewn at left shoulder to cover and protect a worn area of fabric. Please see photographs for full details.
