This necklace and earrings set is large and gaudy. They consist of antiqued gold metal with topaz colored plastic beads. The gold textured cable chain measures 13 to 15 inches long, adjusting with the original hook closure to a small choker size. The ridiculous dangling baubles consist of gold rope chains holding 2.25 inch gold cages with cut plastic balls inside and smaller ones hanging. The bauble charms hang to 3.5 to 4.5 inches, graduating lengths to the center. The smaller multi-cut topaz colored oval beads in between measure .75 inch each. The matching earrings drop to 3 inches and have unusual Napier patented clip-ons. The detailed medallion disc earring tops measure 5/8 inch.
These are ridiculously large and bold components that are surprisingly light weight. This is a great example of typical cocktail jewelry of that era.
This metal and plastic necklace is circa 1950 and made by a high end costume jewelry maker of the time, Napier. The Napier stamp is visible on the earring clip backs, earring clip bottoms and the necklace hook closure. The first half of the 20th century was the heyday for well made costume jewelry sold from fine department stores to Woolworth, usually made in Europe or the United States. The manufacture and quality of costume jewelry deteriorated in the latter part of the century making this era the last with enduring products. Napier's women’s gold, brass/bronze, gold plated and plastic jewelry set.
