50s Harry Litwin Coffin Lucite Handbag

These Coffin Lucite Handbags are very Rare. Sometimes they are called Wedding Handbags. This one is particularly Rare because of the Faux Tortoiseshell Base. Most often you see them done in Clear Lucite or an Ivory White. They are attributed to the Harry Litwin Handbag Company that moved to New York City on Fifth Avenue in 1955. Lucite Handbags were made with a clear dome and silk sprays of flowers were placed inside which preserved them for years. As far as I know these handbags were never labeled by Harry Litwin. This Handbag is a Book Piece and is featured in the book "A Certain Style, The Art of the Plastic Handbag, 1949-59" by Robert Gottlieb and Frank Maresca on page 105. This style of handbag has been featured in many vintage handbag books and valued up to $1000.

This particular handbag was designed with a Clear Dome and a Faux Tortoiseshell Caramel Base, Two Clear Handles, and a Faux Tortoiseshell latch closure. The Flowers are Little Rose Buds with Green Leaves. Generally, the flowers are in Pink Shades. You may see a little glare from the sunlight on the dome.
