Tabak of California
50s 60s Designer Tabak of California Wool Sheath Secretary Dress$85.00
DESCRIPTION: This late 50s to early 60s woolen sheath is from designer Irene Saltern's estate (see below). Wonderful fabric and workmanship. The post-1950s-sack style is more fitted and more flattering than both the sack silhouette and the 60's shift dress into which it evolved. Giving the appearance of a two-piece dress, this is one piece, with an attached jacket and silky rayon inner "blouse" plus a sewn-in, dobby-weave collared dickey. Great look for the office this winter and will easily transition to dinner out. Slight wiggle skirt, with hem circumference narrower than hip measurement.
Ms. Saltern's wools are lovely, and this heathered wool is soft and supple. Dress features 3/4-length sleeves, shaping darts at bodice and skirt, and nylon zipper at back.
CONDITION: Near mint, with the most minimal signs of light wear; this was likely a runway sample, worn once.
SIZE: Estimated best fit for a size 6 up to an 8 (pay close attention to your hip measurement). But please determine fit by the dimensions below. We suggest you compare to a dress you have of similar style or fit. Shown unpinned on a size 6/8 dress form. Dress is not meant to be form-fitting on top, but is slightly more shaped through the skirt.
*Bust: 37 1/2"; *Waist: 34"; *Hip: 39"; *Hem Circumference: 38"; Shoulder to Shoulder: 16 1/2"; Dress Length: 39 1/2" from top of shoulder
* Taken flat on front & doubled
PROVENANCE: Irene Saltern was for years head designer for Tabak of California. She was a film costume designer in the 30’s & 40’s, and started designing commercially in the late 40s. In addition to working for Tabak, she was head designer for Phil Rose and other firms, including her own label. She is widely credited for pioneering the separates for which the California sportswear industry was famous.
