Tabak of California
50s 60s Designer Linen Wiggle Dress Ooak

DESCRIPTION: We believe this late 50s/early 60s sheath from designer Irene Saltern's estate is a one-of-a-kind piece! Exceptionally high quality, both fabric and construction. Made of tan all-natural linen, its "post-1950s-sack" style is more fitted and far more flattering than the sack and the 60's shift dress into which it eventually evolved. Genuine "wiggle" style, with hem circumference narrower than hip measurement.

Features beautiful double topstitching with what looks like thick silk thread, large decorative buttons with loops, raglan sleeves, back nylon zipper. Tuck at bottom adds interest to hemline. Very versatile--wear with a belt, a jacket, dress it up for dinner, down for the office (belt & scarf shown not included).

Has Tabak of California label, but due to lack of size or Union tags, we think this was a sample or spec piece, not a production item. We have a coordinating skirt and top set listed that carries the 1963 and earlier Union label, so we date this dress by both that and its styling.

CONDITION: Mint, although it's been shortened approximately 1". However, appears unworn.

SIZE: Estimated small, approx. 4. Please use the dimensions below! We suggest you compare to a dress you have of similar style or fit. You want this to look shapely, but leave room for your body!

*Bust: 37 1/2"; *Waist: 32 1/2"; *Hips: 36"; *Hem Circumference: 35"; Dress Length: 36" down center back.

* Taken flat on front & doubled

PROVENANCE: Irene Saltern was for years head designer for Tabak of California. She was a film costume designer in the 30’s & 40’s, and started designing commercially in the late 40s. She was the favorite designer of actress Martha Scott and dancer Ann Miller. In addition to working for Tabak, she was head designer for Phil Rose and other firms, including her own label. She is widely credited for pioneering the separates for which the California sportswear industry was famous.
