50s/60s Cape And Dress Set In Navy And Green Silk

A true treasure, this incredible set was custom made for singer Edie Adams in the late 50s or early 60s. It features a jewel-toned silk sheath dress with rear self buttons, a matching scarf, and - the best part - a huge navy blue wool gabardine cape lined in matching green silk. Matching belt included but may be too delicate to wear. The cape is in excellent condition but the dress, while wearable, has a number of issues detailed below.

Detailed measurements:

Dress:
Bust - 35 inches
Waist - 25 inches
Body Length - 17 inches
Hip - 35 inches
Skirt Length - 25 inches

Cape:
Neck opening - 13 inches
Length - about 46 inches

Condition:
Dress has significant discoloration around the waistline and is missing its waist hook (original waist hook placement was closer to 24 inches around, so I leave it to the buyer to place where appropriate for them). The seams around the rear show stress but have not separated. The cape is in excellent condition, there is a place on one shoulder where the lining has started to come unstitched but I could find no other issues to note.

This entire ensemble is hand-finished, truly couture-level work. Adams was notorious for her incredible wardrobe and owned a huge number of designer and custom-made pieces like this one. "The one identity Edie has had no difficulty establishing is that of glamour," wrote a 1962 newspaper article. "The small fortune she spends on clothes may have something to do with the development of this image... 'The two most important things a woman can own,' says Edie, 'are a chic wardrobe and a sense of humor.'" She had excellent taste in designers, noting in another article that "most of my things are from Galanos, Norell, Trigère and Mainbocher. I'm rather proud that Main lets my seamstress refit his things to me. She's that good." And if this is one of her creations or alterations, we can certainly see that she was.
