50’s White and Black Abstract Full Skirt Dress

1950's white and black abstract patterned cotton full skirt dress by designer Carolyn Schnurer.

Upper bodice is a faux wrap with a deep V neckline. Empire waist is defined with black piping, seamed panels underneath which open to a full skirt.

Closes on the side with a long metal zipper.

Short cap sleeves with underarm gussets.

There are some condition issues. There is yellowing across each shoulder. Also there is some yellowing areas on the skirt. A large area on the left and right side of the skirt. It has been freshly cleaned with a gentle handsoak. I did not treat the areas for fear I would cause further damage. There are very faint but can be seen. I have photographed these areas closely for your inspection.

No size is indicated so please check the measurements carefully. Keep in mind there is no give to this fabric. I would consider it a petite size.

bust 36"

shoulders approximately 15"

waist area 28"

hips 46+"

total length 41"

sweep 88"

hem 3"

Label is Carolyn Schnurer.

The following information was provided courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild Label Resource. (1908-1998) Carolyn Schnurer began designing in 1940, producing sportswear for her husband’s bathing suit company, Bert Schnurer Cabana. After WWII, the partners formed the Carolyn Schnurer label. Carolyn Schnurer was an inexpensive sportswear label, making mainly sundresses with clever cover-ups, bathing suits, and casual party dresses, but she also produced some evening wear. Schnurer was a world traveler, who based many of her collections on exotic locales. The label closed in the late 1950s. Her work is on display in various museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC.
